Upper Township was first
settled in the 1690's by whalers, fishermen and
sailors. Visitors continue to be attracted
to the beautiful, rural, and peaceful settings
of the northern-most township of Cape May
County. Most of the township is still in a
natural state, and attracts nature lovers from
all over.
Nestled between the Atlantic
Ocean and the Delaware Bay, visitors can spend
the day hiking
or biking throughout the lush
forests, exploring
the inland waterways or
kayaking through the wetlands.
In addition
to its rich, historic past, nature plays a big
part in attracting people to this area. A
large portion of the Great Cedar Swamp is
located here and is a natural habitat for birds
and butterflies. Upper Township is a very
diverse area where nature is as important as
progress.
Many recreational activities
such as camping, hunting and fishing are popular
attractions. Cape May County Park North,
on Route 9 in Palermo, is part of the County
Park system and is open to the public.
Upper Township is close
enough to the excitement of the resorts but far
enough away for those looking for quiet and
solitude. There are many modern
accommodations, specialty shops and find
restaurants to choose from, in addition to some
of the best camping facilities on the Jersey
Cape. Other activities available include
golfing, boating or birding.
